PRP Procedure
On the day ot procedure, you can have your food, hydrate well and come in loose clothing. The blood will be drawn in our clinic using the same technique as having it drawn for routine lab testing. Around 40-60ml of blood may be needed depending upon your basal platelet count and whether for a single or both knees. It is spun in a special centrifuge to separate its components, and to extract the most concentrated “platelet rich” portion of the plasma. All these are done under sterile conditions and special commercial kits are used for this separation. This process alone takes minimum of 20-30mins.
The knee area is then cleaned with betadine and sterile drape is applied and the extracted PRP is injected into the knee joint under Ultrasound Image Guidance under sterile conditions. Its done under Local Anaesthesia.
Post PRP protocol
- Rest for the joint for next 48-72hrs
- Application of ice on the knee joint for 10mins every hour for the next 48hrs.
- No consumption of over the counter painkillers
- Physiotherapy to be started 72hrs post injection
- To see the dr immediately if there is redness, severe pain, fever post injection.
