What is Pain?

Pain is a warning signal to tell you there is a problem which you should attend to. Its nature’s alarm trying to awaken you against the potential harm or the already ongoing damage in your body. Taking over the counter painkillers is only going to temporarily snooze the alarm. But the damage is ongoing. Our body has the capacity to heal itself but when we have lot of factors like improper lifestyle, environmental triggers, comorbid illness and stressors contributing to the persistence of the problem, the body is going to need help.

Pain is a complex and subjective experience that involves both physical and emotional components.

There are two main types of pain:

1. Nociceptive Pain: This type of pain arises from damage to tissues (such as skin, muscles, or organs). It can be caused by injury, inflammation, or trauma. This is the kind of pain most people experience in response to cuts, bruises, or broken bones.

2. Neuropathic Pain: This kind of pain occurs when there is damage to neurons or nerves or dysfunction in the nervous system itself, such as neuropathy following herpes zoster or conditions like diabetes. This pain is often described as sharp, burning, or tingling.

Pain is also influenced by psychological and emotional factors where stress, anxiety, or depression can increase the perception of pain, while positive emotions or distractions and relaxation techniques can reduce it. The experience of pain varies greatly from person to person and can be influenced by genetic factors too.

Pain can be acute which is short term related to specific injury or it can be chronic.
